Tips That Can Help You With Faster Recovery After a Blepharoplasty

The aim of a blepharoplasty is to remove the excess skin, fat and muscles which make the eyes look droopy. The procedure has become quite popular because as people age, the eyelids start stretching out, which wears out the muscles surrounding them. The result will be fat accumulating in the enlarged sacs, which creates an appearance of droopy eyelids and eye bags under the eyelids.  Most people think this surgery is for purely cosmetic reasons, and while the surgery does make one look younger, it also improves deteriorating peripheral vision. If you are considering having the surgery, here are a few tips which will help you heal fast after this cosmetic surgery procedure.

What to expect

When you book an appointment with the surgeon, they will inspect the extent of the problem and decide whether you should have the surgery as an outpatient or whether you will have an overnight hospital stay. Immediately after the surgery, you should expect redness, swelling and excessive tearing of the eyes. The surgeon will offer ointments which help with dryness; however, there are people who get blurry vision after using these ointments.

Proper after-surgery care

The proper care process after the surgery includes making sure that the eyelids are well lubricated at all times. The ointments offered at the hospital will be great for this. In case there is tightness and soreness after the surgery, analgesics can be used, and if the eyes feel dry, use lubricants to keep ease the pain. Cold compresses also help a lot with the soreness.

Rest the eyes

It is advisable to avoid all activities which may dry the eyes. These include staring at bright light sources such as TVs and computers and even reading. You should also avoid wearing contact lenses at all costs while your eyes recover from the surgery. In addition to these tips, keeping the head elevated as much as possible, especially during the first few days after the surgery, will help reduce the swelling.

A few days after the surgery, the doctor will remove the stitches. When you manage the recovery after the surgery properly, you will be feeling better in as little as ten days after the procedure.  However, for the first few weeks after the surgery, it is recommended that you wear dark sunglasses which will protect your eyes from the harsh rays of the sun. If you follow all these guidelines when recovering from a blepharoplasty, you will be healed in no time.
